Election Day in Sierra County is this coming Tuesday, June 5th. It’s a Primary Election, which means that voters will be deciding which candidates advance to the general election in November.
Early voting at the County Clerk’s office at 100 N Date in T or C is open Friday 6/1 from 8-5 and Saturday 6/2 from 10-6.
Voting on Tuesday 6/5 takes place at the Civic Center (or the location on your voter registration card) from 7-7.
New Mexico has closed primaries, which means that you may only vote in the primary if you have declared a preferred political party. In other words, in this election, people who have registered as Republican will have only Republican candidates on their ballots, and people who registered as Democrats will have only Democratic candidates on their ballots. The candidates who win on Tuesday will proceed to represent their respective parties in November.
The New Mexico Secretary of State provides an information portal to allow voters to review a sample ballot and review their registration.
Voters will choose which candidates advance for many important positions, including:
- Governor
- United States Representative
- Lieutenant Governor
- NM House District 38
- County Commissioner
- Sheriff
- State Auditor
- and many more…
There are numerous contested races on both the Democratic and Republican ballots, which means that informed voters have an opportunity to guide the direction of their respective parties in the general election.
