Tourism brings almost $50M to Sierra County in 2015

Visitor spending in Sierra County reached $49.9 million in 2015, an increase of 4.8% from the previous year.

Direct visitor spending in New Mexico has grown six years in a row, hitting $6.3 billion in 2015, a 3.6 percent increase compared to 2014. And those visitors have a big impact on jobs and taxes. The study said one in 12 jobs in New Mexico is sustained by visitor spending, and tourism generated $629 million in state and local taxes in 2015.

But the tourism picture depends on each county. Some counties, such as Los Alamos County, saw tourism spending (which includes leisure and business travel) increase by double digits. Others, such as Hidalgo County, saw that same spending decrease by double digits.
