In 2015, the state of New Mexico began a planning process for a 500-mile recreational trail for hiking, biking, and horseback riding along the Rio Grande. The process reached a major milestone this week with the release of its Master Plan.
The planned trail tracks the Rio Grande through 86.4 miles of Sierra County, including through Elephant Butte State Park and Caballo Lake State Park, and along the river near T or C.
The next Rio Grande Trail Commission meeting will be on Thursday, December 20th from 1:00-3:00 at the State Records Center and Archives, Piñon Room, 1205 Camino Carlos Rey, Santa Fe, NM 87507. The agenda for the meeting includes adoption of the master plan and the designation of a trail segment in the City of Elephant Butte.
